Super long day. Super day! The way to Honduras from the west coast is through Houston, and that means a midnight flight from Portland. So this launching entry will be brief, 'cause I'm sleepy!
I was met at the airport by the terrific Beverly Thacker, Deputy Public Affairs Officer and my primary liaison for the whole project ~ she's been great and continued to be, filling me in on the process and protocol. She and Mr. Mario Valladares brought me to my hotel to drop off my stuff and then we were off to meet US Ambassador Lisa Jean Kubiske (in the photo). Part of my gig is about promoting voter participation among young people through theatre, and Ambassador Kubiske provided excellent background on the political and social climate of Honduras. There was a coup d'etat in 2009 because the Congress was concerned the president was veering away from Democratic ideals.
Then it was time for lunch. Mr. Valladares recommended El paseo universitario in the mall across the street from the hotel, which was really appreciated because, as I learned, most of the food court offered standard US fare. Such a great meal. It all looked and tasted so good that I forgot that there are some foods a brand-new tourist is supposed to avoid. I couldn't avoid anything on the plate. Pupusa (reminded me of Colombian arepas), taco and enchilada. Loaded with fresh veggies, yum. And the beverage? Good old Jamaica! Delicious!
Getting ready for tomorrow, first day of rehearsals with the students of the UNAH (Universitario Nacional Autonoma de Honduras).
Nervous?
Yeah...
